Audiobook Narration Services: How to Hire the Perfect Narrator

Once your manuscript is complete and ready for audiobook production, it’s time to find an audiobook narrator that best suits your story. This can be a daunting task for authors, as there are many voiceover actors to choose from. So, how do you know how to hire audiobook narrators that will complement your script while fitting your budget? With Author’s Republic’s Narrator Marketplace, it’s easier than you think to hire voiceover actors who check all the boxes.

Step 1: Create an Audition

After you have created a production project in your Author's Republic account, you’ll be taken to a tab called “Audition Details,” which will prompt you to create a narrator audition. There, you will add details, including your audition script, manuscript word count, audition deadline, and narrator preferences, including gender, age, and genre specialty. You’ll select your audition type, including whether you’d like public auditions, where all narrators in the marketplace can audition, or private auditions, where you invite only specific narrators to audition. If you select public auditions, you can also invite specific narrators to apply. Next, search the Narrator Marketplace, review narrator profiles, and invite those you think are best suited for your story to apply. This step is optional if your audition is set to public.

Step 2: Review Narrator Auditions and Pricing

Now it’s time for the most exciting part – the auditions! Once submissions start coming in, you can review them in the “Review Auditions” tab of the site. Each audition will include a bid, which is the total price of the production. Professional narrators typically produce audiobooks using the industry-standard “Per Finished Hour” (PFH) rate, based on the estimated total length of all finished audio files. The number of finished hours is estimated by the word count of your final manuscript.

What to Look for in an Audiobook Narrator

The voice you choose will shape how listeners experience your story, so it’s worth taking the time to evaluate a few key factors before making your final decision.

Turnaround Time and Availability

Before settling on a narrator, discuss your timeline and expectations upfront. Use the chat feature to confirm their availability and ensure they can meet your deadlines. It’s also helpful to ask about current or upcoming commitments so you can avoid delays and keep your production on track.

Tone and Voice Style

Each narrator brings a unique tone and delivery to a project. Look for a voice that aligns with the mood of your book—whether it’s warm and conversational, dramatic, suspenseful, or instructional.

When selecting an excerpt for your audition script, choose a scene that reflects the overall tone of your manuscript. This gives narrators the opportunity to showcase their range and helps you better evaluate how their voice fits your story.

Character Differentiation (For Fiction)

If your book is fiction, the ability to distinguish between characters is essential—especially in dialogue-heavy scenes. A strong narrator can shift between characters naturally, regardless of gender, without sounding forced or distracting. This adds depth and clarity to the listening experience.

Audio Quality

High-quality audio is non-negotiable. While all narrators are vetted to meet our audio requirements, it’s still important to review auditions carefully. Listen for clarity, consistency, and any background noise.

Narrators are responsible for the full production of your audiobook, including editing and mastering, so strong audio quality is critical to the final product.

Experience in Your Genre

While not required, experience in your specific genre can be a valuable advantage. Narrators familiar with your genre often have a stronger sense of pacing, tone, and audience expectations, which can enhance the overall listening experience.

Step 3: Hire the Best Audiobook Narrator for Your Project

After reviewing auditions and taking narrator bids into account, determine who you want to hire and click “Hire Narrator.” This will prompt you to pay the total amount of the production. This payment will be held in escrow and not dispersed to the narrator until after you have confirmed the production is complete. You can read more about how to hire audiobook narrators here
